#BBNaija: Gedoni doesn’t love Khafi and it’s time for her to wake up and play this game

Although the fourth season of Big Brother Naija doesn’t have the pairing system that defined last season, the housemates have begun to couple with each other but it’s been nothing short of sketchy. That said, and to the eyes of viewers, Khafi and Gedoni are the pair of housemates whose relationship has taken on more structure dipped in candy-coated romance. Fans are calling them Khadoni and, truth be told, they look good together. Whether cuddling or the one time they discreetly kissed for prolonged seconds in the pocket of space in the closet last week, after a Saturday party, Khadoni has cemented themselves into our consciousness.

But the relationship doesn’t look as sincere as many viewers had hoped, and the chief reason is Gedoni. During a diary session two weeks ago, Gedoni revealed to Big Brother that he misses KimOprah and won’t mind having her back in the house. KimOprah is an evicted housemate and tragically his ex. How Big Brother Naija keeps bringing in housemates who have dated before the competition is a little bizarre. Also, I can’t come up with a reason Gedoni would publicly say he misses an old flame when his relationship with Khafi, although nebulous at the time, seemingly has the potential to be much more.

I really thought Gedoni was an idiot, in the context of mentioning another woman and potentially enraging Khadoni fans and losing their votes. Now I know he’s not. Yesterday, when the housemates had their diary sessions, Khafi told Big Brother her preferred top five finalists. Gedoni was included, no surprise. But when Gedoni revealed his, Khafi’s name wasn’t mentioned, proving that his relationship with her is only for strategic reasons to keep him in the house.

On Monday this week, Big Brother cancelled the housemates’ nominations for eviction and put everyone on the chopping block. That night, Gedoni and Khafi had sex. Grainy videos of them under the sheets circulated online but to an observant eye, the sex looked simulated, dry humping if you may. This was purposefully done to give them some immunity against eviction, Khadoni supplying sexual content for the show and for viewers to bear that in mind when they vote. But this was more about Gedoni and his idea to be strategic. Unfortunately, Khafi can’t see his endgame because she’s in love, and might just risk it all for a man who doesn’t care about her.

In a Big Brother Naija season where the odds that a woman would win is becoming vanishingly thin, Khafi is still a good prospect. She’s clearly smart, though loquacious, one of the housemates from the diaspora whose thought process seems steeped in Jane Austen romance novels. Lay down with me, my lover. Whatever. Can we blame her though? She’s fallen for Gedoni and in local parlance, she’s yet to ”shine her eye.” Not that she can’t foster relationships in the house, but she hasn’t woken to the fact that Big Brother Naija is a game and Gedoni is a deadly competitor who won’t hesitate in eliminating her, if he had the power.
