Messi to appeal tax fraud sentence

Lawyers of Messi and his father, Jorge have said that they will appeal the 21-month jail term pronounced on them.

A statement said lawyers for Messi and his father believed that the sentence was “incorrect” and “expect the outcome of their appeal to rule in favour of the defence.”

Messi was found guilty of defrauding Spain’s tax authority of €4.1 million between 2007 and 2009. Both Messi and his father were sentenced to 21 months in prison, a jail term they most likely won’t serve.

Messi was also fined €2m while his father was ordered to pay €1.5m.
