AY Makun’s next movie is called “Yoruba Demons”, because why not

Yoruba Demons

As a comedian who many regard as not being funny, AY Makun is unarguably the modern pioneer of gleefully schlocky travel comedies from which he keeps making huge bucks. These movies are frivolously madcap as they are geographical (Atlanta, Jamaica, South Africa) and hint towards a new genre in the already crowded comedy market.

That said, Makun’s upcoming Yoruba Demons, the fourth entry into his catalogue as a filmmaker, isn’t an omnibus in the context of exquisite locations but it’s loaded with real cultural capital. Besides, Makun making a movie based on the culturally dreaded Yoruba Demons feels meta, as the comedian-turned-filmmaker himself is Yoruba and has been rumoured to have been quite player in his hey day. By definition, Yoruba Demons are the type of guys your mama warned you about, who roam the land and are known to wreak heartbreaks and despair after terminating “relationship.”

From what I have gathered, Yoruba Demons is a working title but I don’t think I will complain if the title remains unchanged. Principal photography began early in the year and, guess what, the movie assembles Nollywood bad boys like Jim Iyke and Ramsey Nouah. Even more fittingly, we will be seeing Falz in a role, the rapper and actor whose personality hews closely to the theme.

Yoruba Demons is scheduled for cinema release in July and the director is still unknown. Shot in Abuja and also starring Fathia Balogun, Ireti Doyle and Damilola Adegbite, Makun will be smiling to the bank with this one.
