Atiku Abubakar, Rihanna, Nigeria, Aisha Alhassan | Here are last week’s winners and losers

Across Nigeria and the rest of the world, headlines blazed all week last week. From Hurricane Irma to the doctors’ strike in Nigeria (and we could never forget the ASUU strike too) to Nigeria’s Minister for Women Affairs, Aisha Alhassan’s anti-government activities to Rihanna’s cosmetics line and its historic 40-shades foundation.

From the biggest newsmakers from last week, here’s our list of winners and losers (we can bet you’ll agree with us from start to finish):

WINNERS

Rihanna

In the world of music and fashion, Rihanna had already proven herself a juggernaut so two years ago, when she first talked about venturing into beauty, cosmetics and makeup, we kind of knew what to expect.

But classic Rihanna, she outdid herself and our expectations with the Fenty Beauty line that launched on Friday night. The very inclusive line came with product variations for every woman, their colour regardless. The most remarkable product on the line is the Pro Filt’r Soft Matte Foundation that comes in 40 shades, so no one is left out.

Well done, Rih!

Nigeria

On Tuesday, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) published new data pointing to the fact that Nigeria had officially exited the economic recession that plagued the nation for over a year.

The recession which has been described as Nigeria’s worst in 29 years means that there is positive growth in the country’s GDP but Nigerians may not see an immediate downward slope in prices of goods and services yet.

Of course, President Buhari’s administration took the glory for the good news and everyone has tried to write the script in their own favour. What matters most is that we got here and we’re grateful that it’s over.

M.I

The most talked about topic in pop culture last week was the #LooseTalk podcast that had M.I as a guest and saw the highest number of F-words thrown around on any Nigerian show.

M.I cancelled a flight to be on the Greatest Podcast You Ever Did In Your Life and his mission was to correct all the unfounded notions about his career that had been circulated in an open letter Pulse writer, Ayomide Tayo addressed to him.

Through the shout match and expletive-laden conversation, M.I was able to calmly (for most part) challenge the hosts and essentially, all entertainment journalists in Nigeria to do better in presenting actual facts to readers.

The five living former presidents of the United States

In the wake of Hurricane Harvey that tore through most parts of Houston two weeks ago, former Presidents Jimmy Carter, George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama launched a joint effort to raise funds for victims.

We’re trying so hard to see Trump in this mix in another 10 years or so. So hard!

LOSERS

Nigeria Police Force

When Bauchi’s Senator Isah Misau accused Police Commissioners of paying up to N15 million to get favourable postings, he must have been perceived by most as delusional.

He also attacked the personalities of the current and former commissioners, Idris and Okiro and declared them unfit to rule the Force. As expected, the police published a lenghty comeback accusing the Senator of “dubiously absconding and deserting” the Police Force and not following due process at the point of his retirement.

But few days later, the Police Service Commission confirmed Misau’s retirement letter. Shame on the NPF for raising false accusations and bigger shame on the CPs who have been accused of bribery.

Aisha Alhassan

So one of President Buhari’s ministers, the one who leads the Ministry of Women Affairs publicly declared support for 2019 presidential hopeful, Abubakar Atiku. To be fair on her, she said the former VP was instrumental to her political career but to swear loyalty to a potential opponent of her current boss is why she’s a loser.

The Federal Government

On this one, we’ll pretend like we’re not aware of the ASUU strike. The education sector of the country is not the only one that is currently crippled, the health sector is suffering too.

The Federal Government after signing a Memorandum of Understanding in which it promised to pay up all salaries and arrears, failed to fulfil its promise and dashed the hopes of the doctors and their patients who lay in pain at these government hospitals.

Atiku Abubakar

The Nigerians on Twitter would not even come close to entertaining the thoughts of the former Vice President as president in 2019. No way that’s happening for them. Someone went as far as saying “he would be the worst thing that would ever happen to Nigeria”.

Plus being rejected by Twitter, Atiku was a cry-baby all of last week talking on and on about how President Buhari had sidelined him despite his contributions to bringing him to power.
