The battle between the Federal Government and the members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has attained a new intensity following a 7-day ultimatum issued by the Presidency.

Some of the striking lecturers have remained adamant despite the obvious waning in the resolve of their members evidenced by the withdrawing of some universities from the strike.

The academic body has taken things even further by warning parents not to allow their wards resume in schools to avoid risking the lives of their children.

Vanguard reports:

The Presidency, on its part accused ASUU leaders of treachery and warned the university lecturers not to dare the resolve of government to carry out its threat to sack them if they failed to resume.

The Supervising Minister of Education, Mr Nyesom Wike last Thursday gave the lecturers a seven-day ultimatum to resume from their six-month strike or risk being sacked. President Goodluck Jonathan, however, clarified, weekend, in Bayelsa that the Federal Government did not give the ultimatum, stating that it was given by the Committee of Vice Chancellors. ASUU meantime said no academic activities would resume until the Federal Government perfects and implements resolutions reached with the union.

Describing the threat by Federal Government as height of insensitivity, the academic union asked its members not to sign any register but to remain calm and stay resolute. On denial by President Goodluck Jonathan that he never issued any ultimatum to the union, the National President of ASUU, Dr. Nasir Fagge and University of Ibadan chapter of the Union, ASUU said it was laughable.

Fagge said: “Comrades, can you see the unfolding drama? Now, Jonathan says they didn’t give ultimatum; that the Vice Chancellors did and Wike became their trumpet; But NUC’s ultimatum is by Federal Government to us to resume or get sacked. And Wike’s press address says “FG has directed, “NOT”VCs have directed”Be calm, stay resolute. By God, we are on course”

Also speaking in the same vein, UI ASUU chairman, Dr. Segun Ajiboye asked parents not to risk the precious lives of “our students by releasing them, saying no lecturer will teach them.

“Don’t risk the lives of your children, keep your children at home because ASUU will not teach. Soldiers and the police deployed by the Federal Government will not teach. Mr Wike can come and teach in university. It is a huge joke to sack professors. Our strike must not be in vain.

Our students must see the results. It is funny; we thought we are in a democracy. I assure Nigerians that we know what the law says about the strike. Our job is statute backed. We are not threatened. We do not trust the government. The record of the government is clear. This government is dishonouring agreements. Our members are resolved to pursue this to a logical conclusion”

  2. If I am Mr President I will publicly sacrifice my salaries and security votes (and plead that all well meaning Nigerians both politicians and business men join me willingly )for one year…collect it as a loan from the nation’s treasury and pay ASUU within 24hrs and ensure within 48hrs schools resume…calm all ASUU nerves! then go into serious mopping and monitoring of lecturers activity and sack immediately any lectures (from professor to lecturer1) who comes to work any time later than 8am; send EFCC to dig out their old cupboard for corrupt practices; employ intelligent supervisors to monitor the quality of their lectures; their relationship with students; their qualifications…any little mistake…no panel…but straight sack followed by immediate advert for replacement. I mean people don’t know how to create eternal wave ( make impact forever)… If I was Mr President…I will not wait for 2015 to take the driving seat in Nigeria…for God sake I am the president COFRN of Nigeria… In leadership never take the sympathetic seat…No body is ready to sympathize with you sir…pilots Drive they don’t drawn…Seat up sir …I LUV YOU ( feedback if you care [email protected])

  7. I retch each time I read what fickle minded and plebian spirited people write! Nigeria is a nation that ten years ago, (we thought) was moving in the right direction. With the benefit of hindsight today, we see that our leaders (sic) have no sense of history, and are completely deluded by the euphoria and fanfare of the grandiose offices they occupy. The celebrated chants of sycophancy from the deprived and beggarly masses, wishing for pecks from the table of government, makes my heart bleed! Truth must be told. The Nigerian nation is begging for divine intervention because there is no help in GEJ or anyone of the political gladiators at that. They have no plan for Nigeria's tomorrow! Imagine a University Pro-Chancellor asking that ASUU should call off the strike and let the students get any 'certificate'! What we have today can hardly qualify for a certificate. After this strike, what we will have would certainly be worse than toilet paper! That is what our leaders wish for our children and future. The question is "DO WE EAT TODAY AND MORTGAGE THE CHANCES OF A USEFUL EDUCATION FOR FUTURE NIGERIANS? Notwithstanding which side of this question one may be, everyone knows that sacrifices build nations. The problem is that the average Nigerian would like to eat and drink "for tomorrow we die". Folks like Bashir may not need what ASUU is fighting for, but our children do (or perhaps we do not care for our children too). Mr. Dauda, you may wish to note that the Nigerian state is already sold. What ASUU is doing is like a slave struggling against the chains that hold him tied down. The political money bags are the owners of Nigeria and the rest of us are only just – SLAVES!

  8. Fuck you asuu…we don't need what ever you people are fighting for,it is for your own selfish interest, not even you people can stop us from returning if we are asked to by the FG so back off

  9. Its high time to sell the country called Nigeria to the highest bidder. That way we are sure that there will be enough money from the buying bidder to solve all our problems. Please some body should come and buy Nigeria.

  10. Ride on ASUU!!! I fear our Government more than boko haram!!!

  11. Aremu the greatest analyst. Kudos to u! Ta tête est là! Que la grêve continue!

  12. The insincerity on the part of FG is becoming more unbearable. Would they tell us they have no money left in the treasury or that the barrels of crude oil sold per day are not enough to cater for their own citizens? If there's no money left with the FG, why would they propose that public office holders operate foreign accounts? What happens to the budget not to have being passed if oil benchmark was put at $108 per barrel against $74 Mr GEJ put it? The #500 billion SURE-P fund missing how did it come about? The same goes for the subsidy on kerosene. The list is unending. Even if the FG said there's no money to fund tertiary education, what happens to the money realized from ETF? The masses have nothing to enjoy from the government. The only thing we enjoy is public holidays simply because we are tired or working for under payment.
My main point is that if ASUU suspends the strike without achieving its aim then, it's a wasted effort.
