Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria (ASCSN) has called on President Goodluck Jonathan to remove the director-general, National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Chris Onyemenam from office because of alleged anti-labour policies of the DG.

In a press statement issued in Lagos on Friday and signed by its secretary-general, Alade Bashir Lawal, the union regretted that since Onyemenam assumed office as the NIMC director-general, he has embarked on unproductive projects, generating one industrial crisis or the other, to the extent that the NIMC has not been able to deliver on its primary and simple assignment of issuing identity cards to millions of Nigerians.

“Instead of going about executing the functions for which the organisation was established, Barrister Onyemenam just engaged himself in frivolous acts aimed at achieving selfish goals. This is very unfortunate,” ASCSN said.

It added that after Onyemenam threw more than 5,000 junior workers into the oversaturated labour market in 2012, he started another war of attrition with the ASCSN, which had continued to resist his efforts to relieve more than 1,000 senior staff of their jobs on spurious charges.

The union regretted that even though the NIMC management had been served court processes by the Court of Appeal, Abuja in respect of the retrenchment, while the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity as well as the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation had also written the commission to stay action on the matter, pending the outcome of the court action, Onyemenam has continued to insist that President Jonathan authorised him not to obey court processes nor abide by the rule of law.
