Compiled by Wilfred Okiche

YNaija wishes you a happy Independence Day celebration. Below are tunes, from the past and present, to spice up your day!

Nigeria My Beloved Country -Funmi Adams: We may not know the current whereabouts of Ms Adams but we cannot forget the early 90s when her golden tones provided the soundtrack for many a Independence Day celebrations

Happy Birthday– Evi Edna Ogoli: Many years ago,the queen of reggae made the definitive birthday song. We wish only the best for our dear country.

One Love – Onyeka Onwenu:  The elegant stallion possesses a discography that many present day acts can only dream about but we pick this one because of its timeless message. 50-plus years later, one love has kept us together.

Lift up Nigeria – King Sunny Ade: KSA gathered a few famous friends and added his bit to nation building. He also popularised the message: ‘Nigeria yi ti gbogbo wa ni/ko ma gbodo baje/…gbe kemi gbe”

Power of Naija– 2Face: Where Nigeria seemed to have failed them, the youth discovered Naija and they excelled. This song brings to life the palpable power of the ‘Naija’ phenomenon.

Fire on the Mountain– Asa: We seem to have lost the plot and our leadership appears to be clueless, hence there is fire on the mountain!

I Believe– Ego: We remember Jos in our celebration. #JOStified

There’s a Cry -Timi Dakolo: Many Nigerians are still voiceless!

The Future – TY Bello: Be it Nigeria or Naija, we young people have a responsibility to correct mistakes of the past and build on the present foundations. For the desired future.
