#ArewaAgainstLGBTQ is ignorance that can turn violent and dangerous for LGBTQ people

Over the weekend Arewa Twitter, the online demographic of the North, banded together in activism to advocate against homosexuality and it was one of the most hilarious things I have encountered on the internet. #ArewaAgainstLGBTQ was the unfortunate hashtag and like a tumour, it metastasized into a benign threat just enough to hijack Twitter and also confirmed what we already know about the North – deep-seated ignorance and illiteracy.

Of all the blistering problems ravaging the North, from poverty and insurgency to child marriage and vesicovaginal fistula, it’s rather pathetic and a show of brazen, misplaced priorities to see Northerners weaponise the power of the internet against homosexuality. Which is not even a threat in the first place. Mind you, Northern Nigeria is teeming with gay men regardless of class and social status and maybe charity should begin at home? But seriously, how jobless and perhaps even deluded are you to impose the Quran as Nigeria’s constitution?
The possible ramifications of #ArewaAgainstLGBTQ is that it can morph into real-life violence for LGBTQ people living in the North, and a deepening online hostility and abuse for LGBTQ Nigerians in general.
