“Apparently, the PDP wants to eat its cake and have it” – 7 important things you didn’t read yesterday (but should have)

by Kolapo Olapoju

1. Old foes- Amaechi and Akpabio- become seat mates

For the past few years, River state governor, Rotimi Amaechi and his Akwa Ibom counterpart, Godswill Akpabio, haven’t seen eye-to-eye.

Several peace meetings to end the crisis in the Nigerian Governor’s forum has been derailed by the pair, who seem to always be in disagreement.

However, the pair sat side-by-side at the reconcilatory meeting of the NGF on Monday, May 18.

The report stated that: “When Akpabio came in after the Akwa Ibom Governor-elect, he insisted that a chair be brought for him to sit beside Amaechi who was already seated.”

2. The road will be definitely be rough for Sylva

While his party is still basking in the victorious election outing, former governor of Bayelsa state, Timipre Sylva, appears to be grasping for survival.

After it seemed like he was in the clear, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) re-arraigned Sylva before a Federal High Court in Abuja for fraud involving about N2.45billion.

Sylva, who pleaded not guilty to all the six counts, allegedly committed the offence between October 2009 and February 2010 as governor of Bayelsa State.

3. The N1bn lawsuit between Lagos and Okada riders, yet lingers

About 120 motorcycle riders, popularly called Okada, will know on June 22, whether they’d receive N1bn from Lagos state government.

The Okada riders had sued the state claiming compensation in the sum of N1bn over alleged unlawful arrest, detention, intimidation, embarrassment, torture and seizure of their motorcycles by agents of the state.

According to a Federal High Court in Lagos, the Okada riders will have to wait for about a month longer to know their fate.

4. Apparently, the PDP wants to eat its cake and have it

The Peoples Democratic Party is open to merger talks, yet doesn’t want to change its name.

For a party once described as the largest political party in Africa, it is very much understandable that this bit of pride (the name-PDP) cannot be let go.

“We have a name, tradition and values. Sixteen fruitful years as the guardian of Nigerian democracy cannot be nullified by the reason of temporary setback. We shall rise beyond all and regain our rhythm. Our colour remains green, white and red and power still belongs to the people.”

5. About to be evicted Nwobodo says court doesn’t know the law

A former Governor of old Anambra State, Chief Jim Nwobodo, who is an eviction-battle, says the court order that he should vacate the property, is flawed.

According to Nwobodo, the judgment of a Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja, is error-strewn as far as the law is concerned.

He also revealed that the judgment had been passed for over 2 months and he’s since taken the case to the Appeal court.

6. Lawmaker says OBJ is not a man of his word

Perhaps, Hon. Suleiman Kawu, has wanted to throw a shade at former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, for a long time.

As such, when he had the rare opportunity, he took it and gleefully embraced it.

“By deciding not to impose leadership on the lawmakers in the 8th Assembly, Buhari has once again proven to Nigerians that he is an honest, sincere and patriotic leader who puts the interest of Nigeria and Nigerians over and above any other interest. It shows that unlike former president Olusegun Obasanjo and president Goodluck Jonathan, Buhari is a man of his word, and even democratic than the others before him.”

7. Ousted Senators, lawmakers begin to pack out for fresh blood

No one likes to move, especially from a powerful position… to obscurity and regularity.

Most of the 301 members of the House of Representatives and the 76 senators who lost their bids to return to the National Asembly, have started packing out their belongings.

The development was preceded by a procedural directive of the National Assembly management to the lawmakers to remove their personal effects in order to prepare the offices for re-allocation in the weeks ahead.
