‘Anybody from the South can contest for PDP national chairmanship’ – Markafi

Despite the decision of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to zone its chairmanship to the South-West, the Chairman of the party’s national caretaker committee, Ahmed Markafi, on Monday, said that anyone from the South can contest for the chairmanship.

Markafi stated this when he received the former chairman of Daar communications and an aspirant for the national chairmanship, Raymond Dokpesi, in his Kaduna home.

Markafi pointed out that the race was wide open for anybody from the south regardless of the particular zone, noting that PDP needs to move away from the era of imposing candidates and giving automatic tickets to some aspirants.

He said, “I stand by what I’ve been saying that the race is open. Even though zoning has always been in the party’s constitution, it does not exclude other aspirants because nothing should exclude any other person and at the end of the day, the people will freely have access to all the candidates and freely vote for whoever they want.

“Our party needs to move away from the era of imposition as events of “automatic ticket” led PDP to its present situation, and that is why I want to ensure level-playing field for all.”
