Anti-Igbo song: Is there a threat of genocide?

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, and IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu have raised the alarm that the anti-Igbo song now in circulation has the potential to breed an ethnic genocide in the country.

With references to the 1994 killings between the Hutus and Tutsis of Rwanda, the warnings are being sounded that the audio which demonizes Igbos with the most abusive adjectives, has the capacity to incite the hate of Hausas in the North against Igbo persons.

Igbos are known for their adventurous foray into nearly every part of the world. Very many Igbos trade in the Northern part of the country and own properties too. In the wake of the Kaduna declaration in June, Governors of the 19 Northern states pledged to keep every Nigerians safe within their territories, calling the bluff of the Arewa youth groups.

There are no indications that any precise measures have been taken to discourage the proponents of that declaration from further spreading their mission, and it is credible that they are still the persons behind the production of this audio.

It is imperative that the Governors now do more to show their seriousness on the matter because the audio, which it can be assumed will circulate quickly, could indeed fuel the aversion of its listeners towards the Igbos.

If Igbos will stay in the North beyond the October 1 deadline in the climate of the hate stirred by this song, there must be intentional moves made by the concerned Governments to ensure that safety which they promised.
