Minister of Health, Onyebuchi Chukwu has confirmed another Ebola case, bringing the total number to 11. A doctor who treated Patrick Sawyer, the Liberian-American that brought the disease to Lagos has shown symptoms, Chukwu announced today. A member of staff of West African regional economic body Ecowas this week became the third person to die of the disease in Nigeria.

Eleven people have now been infected after Patrick Sawyer brought the virus to Nigeria.

“Eight (others) are still alive, more than half of them are doing very well and actually showing signs of recovery … under treatment,” Chukwu said.

A nurse with Ebola, which she caught from Sawyer, escaped quarantine in Lagos and headed to Enugu, where she was suspected to have had contact with 20 other people. However, Chukwu clarified that after initial screening, the authorities found out that only six people had been in contact with her. Those six have now been put under surveillance. A total of 169 people are under surveillance in Lagos, eight others have been cleared, including all of Sawyer’s primary contacts from when he came in.

The World Health Organization has called this current Ebola outbreak an international emergency. It has killed around 55 to 60 percent of those have contracted the disease.
