If you’ve been following the news then you’ll know that recently, the Vatican police, after being alerted by several complaints broke up a gay orgy in the heart of the Vatican, the Catholic Church’s very own nation state. To make matters even worse, the orgy was happening in the houses of the most decorated papal secretaries. The man, as yet unnamed by news reports is the papal secretary to Cardinal Francesco Coccopalmerio, a key advisor to the current pope. There were drugs, another thing you wouldn’t expect in the heart of the Vatican, but then again, none of this is really surprising given the things that keep coming to light when it comes to the Catholic Church and its hidden sexual habits.

At least, thankfully, this episode of homosexual activity within the Catholic Church seems consensual. The majority of the allegations of sexual misconduct brought against and in some cases proven against Catholic has been non-consensual and perpetrated against minors. Just last month, Cardinal George Pell, the most senior Catholic priest in Australia was declared wanted for crimes of sexual assault he allegedly committed against two men now in their 40’s in 1979.

Every few years these scandals erupt, revealing yet again, that the Catholic Church has become a refuge of sorts for homosexual men seeking to escape the expectations of their immediate families, society and the threat of eternal damnation. But as they hide themselves under the cloak, they never really address the reasons why they felt the need to hide in the first place. That kind of suppression always come out in the worst of ways, for example drug-fuelled orgies or sexual assault on minors. The Catholic Church cannot continue to pretend that homosexual men do not exist in its congregations and on its pulpits. Otherwise, we will continue to hear stories like this, exposed and then suppressed with vehemence while the lives of thousands get destroyed in the process.
