Anambra speaker flees with mace to stop impeachment

The speaker of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Mrs. Rita Maduagwu on Thursday absconded with the mace in other to avert being impeached by members, The Punch reports.

Seeing she was about to the booted out of her position, Maduagwu fled with the mace, the symbol of authority of the legislative house.

28 members of the house had assembled at the hallowed chamber for the business of the day, before the speaker’s action.

The confusion led the state governor, Chief Willie Obiano to visit the House of Assembly complex in a bid to intercede.

According to a source, the governor addressed the 28 members of the house who were members of All Progressive Grand Alliance, pleading with them to persuade others not to carry out the impeachment.

The speaker of the House was nowhere to be found when the bell signfying her entrance into the chambers rang severally.

Her absence forced the majority leader, Victor Okoye to call for the adjournment of the house to Tuesday, April 11.
