Amnesty and 2 other measures for Badoo-to-Better

The Akinwunmi Ambode Government of Lagos has promised to swoop on the members of the cult and rid the entire Lagos from such groups. Going after them with running bullets would not be much good as other measures that can be explored.

Amnesty

This has shown to be workable in other parts of the country, especially in the Niger Delta, though the circumstances are different. In the case of Badoo, the Government will have the greater power in the negotiation as it will be making the youth an offer of freedom from persecution and detention while enrolling them for pragmatic vocational and technical endeavours to move them from bad to better. But first the boys must willfully renounce the evils of their association, from kidnapping to killing.

Education

It is arguable that the Badoo boys are not exactly stark illiterates, as may be suggested by their disturbing blood money ventures which seem too crude a business for enlightened people. However, there is no way to sufficiently explain the importance of quality education in diverting the minds of young people from anti-social vices.

Rural Development

But, for a fact, no amount of intelligence and education will be enough if these young people cannot find the base in their immediate communities to be able to put their skills to use. For example, if the roads remain terrible, state of the environment an eyesore, and the absence of power, there will be no motivation and encouragement for the youth to lift themselves out. Ambode’s Government needs to begin investing as much as it does in projects like the Eko Atlantic into all communities in Lagos State. Train stations and World class interchanges are nice looking ventures, but are they the foundational projects that can form the basis of development for local people?
