Ambode lost the battle to keep Lagos clean and now he is losing the battle to keep our road traffic free

Ambode

This is not the best of time for Lagos Governor Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode. The famed “itesiwaju eko” man is definitely stuck at the moment. The first challenge that confronted him after his inauguration was the growing heaps of dirt that littered most parts of the state. This was propelled by the poorly implemented Cleaner Lagos Initiative which he branded as a total solution to the dirt challenge in Lagos. At the moment, the failure of the Cleaner Lagos Iniative is evident by the large volume of dirt on Lagos roads and waterways. This means the initiative took Lagos thirty years backward confirming the failure of the hurriedly implemented process contracted to Visionscape Nigeria Limited.

Currently, the Governor is losing another battle that may pull the shine off the achievements of his administration. The traffic situation in Lagos is at an all-time low. The situation as been termed by some residents as the worst ever in the history of the state. Lagos has always had issues with traffic due to its population and its cosmopolitan nature but the state was able to contain it through the introduction of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the good job of the guys at Traffic Radio and the police but it seems the individuals saddled with the responsibility of maintaining sanity on Lagos roads have gone to sleep.

From Ikorodu road to Berger, Oshodi to Mile 2, the Apapa expressway gridlock, the horror faced in Ikeja, it has become a nightmare for residents of the state to move freely and conduct their businesses. The traffic situation has posed a huge challenge by increasing the man hours wasted by residents. The state government is yet to proffer any workable solution to ease the situation rather it is getting worse.

The state roads have been taken over by trailers and articulated vehicles while the bridges have been turned to parking lots for these heavy duty vehicles. This is a poor development in a ‘mega city’ like Lagos. The ongoing traffic situation if not addressed is capable of robbing the state its mega city status. Lagosians may forgive Ambode for losing the battle to keep Lagos clean but we will not accept his failure to reposition the traffic situation in Lagos.
