[The Alausa Blog] Dear Gov Ambode, Bariga residents need your urgent attention

As Governor Ambode’s administration daily churns out details of every of its latest achievements via social media, a number of people smartly use the opportunity of the comment section to accentuate their requests to the government.

While we wandered through Lagos state government’s Facebook page in search of what has now become inconsequential, we found a Facebook user who has consistently shared the same comment on every post from the last 24 hours.

Facebook user, Michael Chibuzor Taiye Ogbonta is calling the attention of the governor to a project in Oworonshoki that involves the sandfilling of the Lagos Lagoon to reclaim 29.6 hectares of land. The project which started in May 2017 is essentially to “improve aesthetics, security and attract investments in water transportation in that part of the state”.

Months after, locals who are directly or indirectly affected by the reclamation project have called on the government and so far, they’re yet to get any attention.

In a special report published by Premium Times in August, the voices of residents of Ago-Egun a fishing community whose livelihoods have been cut off, thanks to LASG’s project, were amplified. They told of how their fishing routes have been blocked and fishing has been made impossible due to dredging and sandfilling.

But Michael’s concerns differ slightly. According to him, “People on both side of the 3rd Mainland Bridge have been crying since the beginning of the project. Dirty black stinking water have covered streets that are close to the 3rd Mainland bridge, leaving adults and children to roll up their trousers and dresses and walk in the dirty water as they go about their daily activities of work and school.”

He added, “Since the ongoing sandfilling at Oworoshoki end of the lagoon, the drainage have had no where to flow to, thereby returning to the streets and flowing thereon. Ariyo Street towards the Lagoon, Olowolagba Street, Ososa Street, Ige Street, Jide Street are all affected. I live on one of the streets and I can tell you that the suffering is unexplainable. We are being exposed to diseases, many are suffering from athletes foot, many with wounds on their legs are at risk of being infected with tetanus which can take a life if care is not taken.”

The complaints are piling and it has almost become characteristic of the Governor Ambode’s administration to leave the masses debilitated while it pursues its megacity goals and scores points among the elites.

If for nothing Governor Ambode, your favourite protege, Olamide represents Bariga. Would you want to disappoint him like this?
