Less than two weeks after the release of their colleague Peter Greste, Al Jazeera journalists, Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed have been granted bail after spending over 400 days in jail.

They were arrested in December 2013 on fabricated charges of assisting terrorists and spreading false news.

Fahmy will pay 250,000 Egyptian pounds (about £21,000) for his freedom, but Mohamed and several students also tried alongside Greste have no fee to pay.

Al Jazeera spokesperson Osama Saeed said: “Bail is a small step in the right direction, and allows Baher and Mohamed to spend time with their families after 411 days apart. The focus though is still on the court reaching the correct verdict at the next hearing by dismissing this absurd case and releasing both these fine journalists unconditionally.”

The next hearing for the pair will be on 23 February 2015.
