Ademola Adeleke dances to victory, Sheriff out in the cold, Trump Jr and Snr | Here are last week’s winners and losers

From Nigeria’s looters gang to the rise and fall of political juggernauts and to America’s first family, here are the news makers from last week who made it to our winners and losers list:

WINNERS

Ahmed Makarfi

The factional crisis that has threatened the strength and unity of the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) since it experienced major losses at the 2015 elections has now been put to rest. On Wednesday, 12 July, the Supreme Court in Abuja declared Ahmed Makarfi as the authentic leader of the party.

The ruling spelt victory not just for Makarfi but for his major supporters like Ekiti state governor, Ayo Fayose who said he would have tore his membership card if the court had ruled otherwise.

Ademola Adeleke

The PDP candidate did not only win in 9 out of 10 local governments in the Osun West senatorial district, he also won extensive support and cheers from Nigerians, thanks to his admirable dance moves.

The rookie politician ran to fill the seat left vacant in the Senate by his brother, Isiaka Adeleke who died months ago and caused a great scene of political drama when he defected from the ruling APC to the PDP just before the election.

Adeleke, who is Davido’s uncle and B-Red’s father, shocked the APC with his victory and is goals for the younger folk. See why:

The Osinbajos

The second family in Nigeria make it to our winners list for two things: the sheer joy and pleasantness that they exude and the way they remind us that little acts of kindness go a long way. We don’t find any of those characteristics in those who hold power in this country.

Professor Yemi Osinbajo, unmindful of his busy schedule as Acting President, still surprised his wife, Dolapo with a birthday cake at midnight. These ones are a rare breed abeg.

LOSERS

Donald Trump

Is anyone shocked that the US President is top on our losers list again? Then you must be new to this space.

Remember when Donald Trump said his daughter, Ivanka looked so good he would date her if she weren’t his child, leaving the world in shock? Well, he sort of did it again. Only this time with another man’s wife and the First Lady of an entire country.

Donald Trump and his wife, Melania were in Paris last week meeting with French President, Emmanuel Macron over diplomacy matters and on sighting and shaking hands with the latter’s wife, Brigitte, Le Donald passed compliments that further prove him a sexist.

Trump said to Mrs Macron, “You’re in such good shape”, then turned to her husband as he added, “she’s in such good physical shape. Beautiful”. His deplorable attitude has received worldwide criticism and we know now more than ever that Trump just doesn’t know how to act right.

Donald Trump. Jr

Like father, like son! The younger Trump has been under fire for having contacts and holding a meeting with a Russian lawyer during the presidential campaign. The meeting was held in Trump tower and also had Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner and campaign manager, Paul Manafort in attendance. Its purpose was to get information that would ruin opponent, Hillary Clinton’s campaign from the said Russian lawyer.

The revelations that have been made further throw light on the possibilities of a collusion between Russia and Trump’s campaign to influence the 2016 general election. Investigations are ongoing and Trump Snr is tweeting up defenses for his son. For him, all of this is just fake news.

Usman Yusuf

You probably aren’t familiar with the name but the man is famous now for alleged corruption and embezzlement.

So Yusuf happens to be the Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) *who knew Nigeria had NHIS? and he has been accused of “corrupt expenditure of N292 million which he allegedly spent on health care training without recourse to any appropriate approving authority.”

He was suspended by the Health Minister but the headstrong man refused to be dragged like that and said NO! Bigger troubles? The Acting President has ordered a probe into the matter.

Ali Modu Sheriff

His brief stint as PDP leader came to an end when the Supreme Court ruled in favour of Ahmed Makarfi on Wednesday. Best believe, Sheriff was left in shock after the announcement.

His fate with the party after this loss is now known, he wasn’t popular among party bigwigs and has been accused of colluding with the APC to cause crisis in his own party. We honestly don’t know where Sheriff will go from here, he probably doesn’t know too.
