The governor of Kogi has been spending, spending, spending – in 9 highlights

The new All Progressives Congress Governor of Kogi state, Yahaya Bello has been hailed as one of the youngest for the job.

And what’s that thing Nigerians say with regards to ‘the young shall grow’?

According to a Premium Times investigation, the governor has been a fireball of drama – most involving money – since he got into office six months ago.

These are 9 highlights.

1) On his third day in office, Bello approved N15 million as his security vote. Two days later, he approved the payment of the fund.

2) On February 2, just nine days in office, another memo was raised by the Permanent Secretary to the Kogi state Government House, Ilemona John, requesting for security fund. This time, the amount was increased to N20 million. Request was approved same day by the governor

3) The next day, February 3rd, another another memo was raised for the release of more security funds, this time, N5 million was requested.

Governor Bello approved same day. Sharp, sharp, no time to waste.

4) The permanent secretary, who by the way is a Pastor, raised yet another memo on the same day asking for N20 million because the governor’s “security fund which has just been exhausted.”

It was approved immediately by the good Governor of Kogi.

5) The Permanent Secretary raised another memo five days later, on February 8th, for more security vote. This time for N100 million.

Nigeria’s youngest Governor waited for a day before approving release of the fund.

6) A few hours later, on February 9, the Perm. Sec. returned with another memo for N100 million. It was approved on the same day by the governor.

7) N148 million has so far been spent on furnishing and renovating the governor’s office at the Government House.

Guess what? John raised another memo of N99, 983, 994.00 on February 1 for the refurnishing of the office by a company, Maj Global Construction Company Ltd.

It was approved same day

8) The Perm. Sec. returned with yet another memo on March 4th, asking for the release of N48, 593, 250.00 “for additional works on the renovation/furnishing and maintenance of the governor’s office at Kogi Government House”.

What do you expect? The memo was approved same day by Governor Bello.

9) Bear in mind that state workers haven’t been paid their monthly salary for months.

Our sympathies are with you, people of Kogi.
