602 repentant Boko Haram members denounce membership | 5 Things that Should Matter Today

Amidst increasing insurgent attacks in the North East of the country, there are reports that about 602 repentant Boko Haram terrorists have been set free after denouncing membership of the group and swearing an oath of allegiance to the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Reports detail that the ex-combatants took the oath before an 11-man quasi-judicial panel headed by Justice Nehizena Afolabi of the Federal High Court, Gombe.

The event took place after the ex-combatants had completed the six months of  de-radicalisation, rehabilitation and reintegration programme of Operation Safe Corridor, a multi-agency humanitarian effort established in 2016 to encourage Boko Haram terrorists to turn a new leaf and led by the Defence Headquarters.


CBN bans maize importation

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has ordered banks and all authorised dealers to stop the processing of Forms M for the importation of maize with immediate effect. In a statement signed by CBN’s Director in charge of Trade and Exchange Department, Dr. O.S Nnaji, it was communicated that the directive was to take immediate effect.

The reasons for the embargo on maize importation are to increase local production, stimulate a rapid economic recovery, safeguard rural livelihoods and increase jobs. This is in addition to a list of tomato paste, cement, poultry, furniture and roofing sheets.


Airborne transmission of COVID-19 is possible  -NCDC

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) on Monday, warned Nigerians that airborne transmission of Coronavirus, asides the established droplet transmission, is possible.

In a briefing by the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 in Abuja, the Director-General of the NCDC, Dr. Chikwe Ihekweazu, espoused that new evidence lends credence to this information and urged citizens to remain cautious, maintain good hygiene, wear their masks and avoid populated gatherings.


“I slapped Akpabio for harassing me”   -Joy Nunieh

The former acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Joi Nunieh, has accused Godswill Akpabio, Minister of Niger Delta affairs, of sexual harassment and fraudulent practices.

In an interview on Arise TV, Nunieh said she slapped the minister over an incidence of harassment that reportedly happened at the Minister’s Guest House in Abuja. She said her reaction to it showed she had no tolerance for “nonsense” as a woman from Rivers state. Nunieh also accused the former Akwa Ibom Governor of trying to inflate the NDDC budget.
