5 reasons why House on the Rock is showing Selma this Sunday

by ‘Ifreke Inyang

This Sunday – February 8 – there will be a screening of the movie Selma, at the House on the Rock church in Lekki.

But why has the church decided to screen this movie, that centers around a fight for freedom, equality and change?

1. The times call for it

As at Saturday night, Nigerians were not certain as to if the elections will be conducted on February 14 or not. What is very clear though, is that this year – whether next week or in another six weeks – we will vote. The subject matter in Selma is very relevant to our current phase as a nation and for everyone who demands change (or not), this is the movie to inspire you.

2. HOTR is not your regular church

From the first Sunday Pastor Paul Adefarasin announced the screening of Selma, he repeatedly stated that House on the Rock, beyond winning souls for the kingdom, was keen on equity and social justice. And this is just another way the church is trying to affect national transformation, by shaping conversations and mindsets.
3. David Oyelowo and Carmen Ejogo

David Oyelowo has been basking in critical acclaim for his interpretation of Martin Luther King in the movie. Infact, his omission from the Best Actor Oscar nomination list, has been labelled scandalous by many buffs and critics. Ejogo also played a starring role in Selma. And both stars are Nigerian. On Sunday evening, we will be celebrating our own.
4. Evangelism time

Of course, there is no way House on the Rock will not be welcoming new members after Sunday’s screening. For some, it will be because the classy and upscale setting of the church matches their lofty standards. For others, it will be a sort of appreciation for their efforts in beaming the movie for free. Whatever the reason, this will definitely be a form of evangelism.
5. Leading the way

Sunday’s screening will be the first time ever that Selma will be shown in Nigeria. And it is rather remarkable that it won’t be at any of the swanky cinemas around town, but in a church auditorium. Well done to the team at House on the Rock, for making this happen!
