5 reasons Nigerian celebs are now clapping back

Gone are the days a celebrity will play it cool and take the higher road when criticized or teased by a fan or the media.

We’ve heard, watched and read ceaseless number of stories about this celebrity or that celebrity who either walked out during an interview, punched a camera or yelled at a fan after being provoked by a statement, question or incessant stalking.

So why have they lost their tough skins?

Well here are 4 reasons explaining how sometimes that fabric can be a little inconvenient.

  1. They’ve had enough

You think Omawumi was the first to snap at an interviewer or walk out on the set of an interview?

The list is countless.

She isn’t the first- maybe the first Nigerian but certainly won’t be the last. Omawumi may have just paved way for the others who, if they don’t like your question, would react by storming off or responding in a manner that their PR people would be grateful for [more work means, more money].

They’ve had enough and they have just been given the permission to simply [but interpreted in another manner] say they don’t like it. And trust me, this is just the new cool.

As far as clapping back at fans is concerned, Tonto Dike is the queen. That threshold to withstand internet or media trolls wore off as early as possible -in her career.

Others who are worthy of mention in this department are – Lilian Esoro and Kate Henshaw.

2. They are human too

They have feelings too. Shocking, we know.

In a parallel universe, Esoro would be allowed to call out someone who dared to call her fat [or even slap the person impulsively, figuratively].

So yes, they are celebrities who signed the honorable code of conduct but at some point, the line has to be drawn.

And sometimes [most times provoked], they come down to earth and act like humans.

Because at the end of the day, they still are humans and it is only normal for celebrities like Kate Henshaw to school some internet troll who thinks they know more about you than yourself.

3. Celebrities are feeble

Even to their fellow celebrities.

Rapper, Wale once came to Olamide’s defense when his ‘stylish’ picture was heavily criticized.

What most don’t know is that most attacks hit home, and the same way an attacker won’t take it, is the same way these celebrities feel.

Some are actually that fragile and can’t take a swipe, no matter how neatly laid.

4. Social media trolls have become nastier

Oh the trolling and the trolls are now so vicious.

They do so with careless abandon and wanton disregard for your feelings. It seems strengthened with every day that comes.

For some, it is somewhat of a career.

For no apparent reason, a troll makes it their daily agenda to piss off least a celebrity.

It could be from a recent happening or a past event. They don’t mind digging.

For the celebrities, it is a case of damned if I do, damned if I don’t, so why not?

The most hilarious was when a troll told Tekno his girlfriend could pass for his mother. The comeback didn’t seem like he gave it a second thought. Same as Agbani Darego’s clapback to a troll who asked the model to add a little weight. As Julius Agwu asked [his troll], are you my creator?

5. It affects their brand

As much as this aspect tried to stay untouchable, it is unavoidable.

A continuous troll attack can actually damage a celebrity’s brand if nothing is said.

An accusation for instance, if unattended, could stick and affect the celebrity as the silence could be misconstrued for guilt or even weakness.

Gone are the days a celebrity would let something slide. Nowadays, you’d find them in don’t-ruin-my-endorsement-prospects mode.

Because poverty has no friend.
