3 reasons we’re excited for Brymo’s ‘Merchants, Dealers & Slaves’

Brymo-Merchants-Dealers-Slaves-October-2013-bellaNaijaIt’s been close to a year since Brymo’s debut release from Chocolate City, Son of a Carpenter, and while we wouldn’t exactly describe a follow-up as long overdue, it certainly isn’t a bad time for one to come out. Thie year has seen Brymo in the headlines a lot, little for his music, so the announcement that his new album, Merchants, Dealers and Slaves is set for release on the 20th of this month is definitely a welcome one. Here are 3 reasons we are excited for the release.

1. Down

Brymo’s always been a fine singer but on his newest single, Down, he’s never sounded better. The song – his first release from his forthcoming independent album – and its accompanying video were released two weeks ago, seeing the star take a somewhat minimalist approach with stellar results. If he wanted to whet our appetites, he definitely succeeded.

2.And then there’s this promo video for his album.

Called ‘Merchants, Dealers and Slaves’ the animated video does a good job of creating interest in what’s to come. It depicts people in various stages and situations of oppression, and while the narrative might not exactly be clear, we’re intrigued. Oh, he also sings what appears to be the title track to the album, in the video, and it sounds fantastic.

3. Jesse Jagz

Brymo split from Chocolate City earlier this year under controversial circumstances, to say the least. Jesse Jagz did the same and went on to what is certainly one of the best Nigerian releases to come along in a while. Not to imply, of course, that Chocolate City was holding these young men back musically, but it stands to reason that whatever creative rebirth the split from Chocolate City afforded Jesse Jagz ,could have been experienced by Brymo as well, and for that, we anticipate.
