2015: Niger declares 2-day holiday for PVC collection

by Ranti Joseph

Niger State Government has declared February 5 and 6 as work-free days to enable eligible voters collect their Permanent Voter Card ahead of the general elections.

This was disclosed in a statement released by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Israel Ebije on Tuesday, February 2.

The government said the holiday would give eligible voters the opportunity to collect their voter cards before the new deadline of Sunday, February 8, set by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Ebije said the state government had resolved to ensure that nobody was excluded on account of failure to collect PVCs. He added that the work free days would enable people to collect their PVCs within the limited time frame.

The governor’s spokesperson said the work-free days would not affect the operations of Federal Government establishments and business organizations, urging the state civil servants to use the period to mobilize people at the grass roots to collect their PVC.

He urged those who had earlier registered to collect their PVCs at designated collection points, adding that they should not repeat the mistakes made in previous elections, where voter cards were abandoned by registered voters.

“Your PVCs are not just ordinary cards; they are a veritable tool which you would use to elect your preferred candidates in the coming elections and many more elections to come. It is therefore instructive for every eligible voter to collect voter card,” the statement added.
